Can A Healthy Diet Lower Your Risk of Hearing Loss?

Hearing loss affects nearly 50 million individuals throughout the United States. As we all know nutrition is fundamental to health, but what you might not know is how it can affect the auditory system. Although there is no one remedy that is going to cure hearing loss studies confirm that hearing loss and poor nutrition go hand and hand!

Bringham and Women's Hospital (BWH) conducted a study using a questionnaire and responses from roughly 71,000 women. These studies monitored the consumption of an overall healthy diet vs. a less healthy diet for more than 20 years. They asked the individuals about their eating habits every four years as well as whether they had developed any sort of hearing problem.

Using the responses from the roughly 71,000-woman BWH researchers concluded that those who consumed an overall healthy diet had a lower risk of hearing loss. Woman whose diets resembled the Alternative Mediterranean diet (AMED) & Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) pattern (known to be associated with good health) had a 30 percent lower risk of a moderate or worse hearing loss.

The AMED diet consists of extra virgin olive oil, grains, legumes, vegetables (no potatoes), fruits, nuts, fish and moderate intake of alcohol while the DASH diet being high in fruits, vegetables, nets, seeds, legumes, lean meats, fish, poultry and nonfat dairy. In both these diets it is important to note to limit foods that are high in sodium, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) as well as processed foods.
